Why You Crave Sugar After Dinner in Midlife

I used to finish dinner and immediately want something sweet. The fix wasn't willpower. It was my plate.

For a couple of years I would finish dinner, then stand at the pantry looking for cookies. I thought I lacked discipline. Then I looked at what I had actually eaten: pasta, bread, a little chicken, a salad with a sweet dressing. It was a plate that set me up for a craving.

What is going on

When a meal is mostly starch and sugar, your blood sugar rises quickly and then drops. Your body answers the drop with insulin, and insulin is the hormone that stores energy. After the drop, a craving shows up, and it usually asks for something sweet. I think of insulin as the master fat-storing hormone: the steadier I keep it, the steadier I feel. I learned a lot about this from Candi Frazier and her Primal Bod approach for women over 40.

In perimenopause this can feel louder, because my sleep and my stress are already off. A craving at 8pm is often my body asking for food that is more solid than what I gave it.

The fix I use: protein first

  • Anchor dinner with protein. Steak, ground beef, salmon, chicken thighs, eggs. About a palm-and-a-half of it, and I eat it first.
  • Add fat. Butter, tallow, the fat on the meat. Fat tells my body it is done.
  • Keep the starch small. A baked potato or rice is fine, but it is a side and not the main event.
  • Salt it well. A properly seasoned plate is more satisfying. I use Salt of Life.

If I still want something sweet

Sometimes I do. Then I have a ripe piece of fruit, like a pear or a few berries, with a small spoon of raw honey, after the protein. It lands very differently than candy on an empty stomach. I treat it as part of dinner, not an extra on top of it.

Other things that help me

  • A ten-minute walk after dinner.
  • Finishing dinner early, with the kitchen closed afterward.
  • A real protein breakfast. If I start the day on carbs, the evening craving is worse. I describe my morning plate in this post.
  • Magnesium in the evening, which is part of my winding down. I cover it in my magnesium routine.

What I noticed

Within a couple of weeks of protein-first dinners, the pantry stand-off ended. I wasn’t forcing myself to resist. I just wasn’t pulled there anymore. That is my experience, and yours may differ, but the plate is easy to test for yourself.

Questions I get

Why do I want sugar right after dinner?

In my experience it follows a starchy, low-protein meal. Blood sugar rises and falls, and a craving follows. A protein-first plate stopped it for me.

How much protein should be on my dinner plate?

I aim for a palm-and-a-half of meat, fish or eggs, eaten first, with fat and a small side of starch.

Is fruit okay if I still want something sweet?

I have ripe fruit with a little raw honey after the protein. Eaten that way it satisfies me without a crash.

Does a walk after dinner help?

A ten-minute walk after dinner helps me feel steadier and ends the evening snacking.
